James Griffith

James Griffith. Rector of Sutton 3rd March 1569, died 29th December 1600

James Griffith was appointed rector of Sutton in 1569. The Bishop of Winchester was Robert Horne. The patronage(1) seems quite complex as there are multiple people listed as patrons.

Henry Bronker of Stoke
Thomas Chaplin Esq, of Mere
John Powell
Hugh Powell

These are likely to be a committee acting on behalf of Sir Francis Carew.

There seems to have been a school set up in Sutton. On 20th June 1581 Hugo Price BA was appointed as Curate and Schoolmaster(4).

Rowlandus Lewes was appointed curate on 5th January 1587 by Thomas Cooper, the Bishop of Winchester.
