Help us Save the Good Samaritan Window at Sutton Soup

The Friends of St Nicholas Churchyard are delighted to be taking our Save the Good Samaritan Window campaign to Sutton Soup on Thursday 22nd October 2026 at 7:30 pm, at St Nicholas Church, Sutton, SM1 1ST.

We will be pitching for funding towards a professional conservation report on the historic 1899 Good Samaritan stained-glass window. This report is an important next step in understanding exactly what needs to be done to protect the window while essential repairs are carried out to the surrounding South Aisle Western Gable.

The wall is deteriorating, flint is beginning to come loose, and the stonework around the window needs urgent attention. Our wider campaign has a £40,000 fundraising target, and Sutton Soup gives us an opportunity to secure practical help with one of the first stages of that work.

What is Sutton Soup?

If you have never been to Sutton Soup before, the idea is wonderfully simple.

Local community groups each give a short pitch explaining a project they would like support for. Everyone attending enjoys some soup, hears about the different projects, and then votes for the one they would most like to support. The money raised through the evening goes to the winning project.

It is community crowdfunding at its most local, friendly and democratic.

Why we need your support

We would love to see as many Friends, supporters and people interested in Sutton's heritage as possible in the audience.

The Good Samaritan Window is not simply part of the fabric of St Nicholas Church. It is part of Sutton's history. Installed in 1899, it was made by James Powell & Sons and commemorates Samuel More Richards, a Sutton resident, magistrate, wine merchant and former Churchwarden.

Its story connects local people, Victorian craftsmanship, faith, art and the history of the town itself.

Heritage is everyone's, and by supporting our pitch you will be helping us take another step towards preserving this remarkable window for future generations.
